For foreign relations between one country and another country, use the name of the country, followed by 'foreign relations', followed by the name of the other country,

eg New Zealand Foreign relations United States

You may also use a region,
eg  Oceania Foreign relations ;  Pacific area Foreign relations ;  Islands of the Pacific Foreign relations

The same principle applies to Foreign economic relations, Military relations, Military policy, and Relations between one country and another country.

Database search hints

Have a selection of key words for your assignment topic. Ask yourself these questions:

If you are searching for a phrase, how can you search for a phrase in the database you are using? Some databases will search for two separate words as a phrase, while many databases require the phrase to be inside quotes,
eg "closer economic relations".

Is the word you are searching with likely to be singular or plural?
eg country countries

Is the American spelling different to the English spelling?
eg globalisation globalization

Does the database allow you to construct a search that will look for singular or plural forms of a word, and find British or American spelling? This is usually done by truncation symbols, or wildcards.

Is there more than one word that can be used for the topic you are looking for?
eg apec  or  asia pacific economic community

Does the database allow you to construct a keyword search using synonyms? This is usually done with a boolean keyword search, using the boolean operator 'or'.
eg "closer economic relations" or cer

If a database allows you to search by a subject, what is the subject heading? If you do not know the subject heading to use, do a keyword search, look at the record for a useful article, and look at the subject headings that have been used to index that article. Some databases link from the subject heading in a record to all items indexed by that subject heading in the database. Some databases have a thesaurus, giving the terminology to use for subject searches within that database. Index New Zealand uses the APAIS Thesaurus: a List of Subject Terms Used in APAIS; the Australian Public Affairs Information Service. 7th ed.. This is available in print, and online.
