The New Zealand Statutes and Regulations Heritage Collection provides electronic copies of colonial legislation. Coverage starts from 1842. Note: not all years are available online.

The Mäori Land Legislation Database provides a summary of all New Zealand legislation since 1840 which has affected Mäori or Mäori land. The commentary is especially useful, providing information on the historical context and impact of each act.

Electronic Resources

  • LinxPlus and Briefcase (in Brookers Online) provide summaries and full text reported and unreported judgments. Judgments on LinxPlus are taken from the Court of Appeal and High Court. Judgments on Briefcase are taken from the District Court, Court of Appeal, High Court, Privy Council and other selected judicial bodies
  • Fenton's Important Judgments contain a significant collection of nineteenth century decisions of the Native Land Court and the Compensation Court. This database provides a useful insight into the workings of the Native Land Court between 1866 to 1879, the process of judicial reasoning, and the state of relations between the Native Land Court and colonial government.
  • The New Zealand Law Reports are New Zealand's official reporting series. The subject heading index includes 'Mäori and Mäori Land'. Subdivisions include: alienation, customary Mäori rights, jurisdiction of the Mäori Appellate Court, succession and Treaty of Waitangi. Electronic coverage starts from 1958.
  • Waitangi Tribunal Reports database provides information on the structure and role of the Waitangi Tribunal, information on the claims settlement process, and full text Tribunal reports. Not all published reports are available full text online.
  • DSL Environmental Case Law contains decisions relating to the Resource Management Act 1991. These cases are sourced from the Environment Court, Court of Appeal, High Court and District Court.
  • The Maori Land Court Judgments and Decisions are mainly from the Maori Appellate Court, and are now available through the Ministry of Justice website.
  • The Mäori Land Court Minute Books are a valuable source of information on Mäori land, whakapapa and iwi histories. See the guide for search instructions and field descriptions.
  • Copies of the Papatupu Minute Books are held in the Mätauranga Mäori Collection, General Library. Click here for more information.
