BACKBLOCKS PHYSIC.
Elderly Traveller (very much up country) : Can you direct me, sir, to the chemist's shop?
Leading Citizen : Chemist's shop, eh! Got no such luxury in these here parts.
Elderly Party : What do you do, then, for medicines when anyone takes ill?
Leading Citizen : Whisky's the only physic we're any call for up here, and it cures every time. Say, will you join us in a dose?

Databases
These databases contain references from articles published in journals, newspapers, magazines, books, and conferences proceedings. Some of our databases contain the full text of articles while others contain abstracts only.
These databases are recommended:
- FindNZarticles includes Index New Zealand INNZ (an index with abstracts from New Zealand journals, magazines and newspapers) plus other indexes of New Zealand newspapers and book chapters.
- Historical Abstracts covers the world excluding the United States and Canada. America: History and Life is the North American companion to Historical Abstracts.
- History of Science Technology and Medicine is an index of journal articles, conference proceedings, books, book reviews, and dissertations
- Bibliography of British and Irish History indexes journals and book chapters on the history of Britain, the Empire and Commonwealth countries.
- JSTOR is an archive of scholarly journal literature, with hundreds of full-text journals. Useful for older material but does not always have the most recent issues.
- Project Muse has more recent issues of journals than JSTOR, also full-text.
- Google Scholar Use the Library website to get into Google Scholar as this will give you free access to many of the articles it finds.
