- Jones, Maldwyn, The Limits of Liberty: American History, 1607-1992, Oxford, 1995.
- Takaki, Ronald, A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America, Boston, 1993.
- Zinn, Howard, A People's History of the United States, London, 2003.
Reference books are an excellent place to start your research. You should then go on to read more in-depth journal articles and books.

This is a comprehensive 10-volume dictionary and is an excellent introduction to many topics in American history.

- Purvis, Thomas L., A Dictionary of American History, Cambridge, Mass, 1997.
