Essay Assignment Tutorial 

A optional combined Literature Search Skills tutorial is sometimes offered for all BIOSCI 320, BIOSCI 396, and BIOSCI 394 students.  The tutorial will show you how to carry out a literature search the easy way using a variety of literature sources.

  • The essay assignment requires you to conduct research using Library databases, electronic journals, print journals, electronic books and print books to find peer reviewed literature relevant to your essay topic - this is called a Literature Search.  [Primary, Review and Popular Journals, what are the differences?]
  • The tutorial will show you how to search the databases and use electronic journals.

Finding Popular News Stories

The following Library databases index popular literature (newspapers, magazines etc.) from New Zealand and Internationally, and are a good starting point for locating popular news stories.

  • NewzTextPlus
    NewzTextPlus indexes New Zealand newspapers including The New Zealand Herald, Waikato Times,  Sunday Star Times,  Sunday News, The Dominion Post, The Dominion, The Evening Post, The Press, The Timaru Herald, Evening Standard, The Daily News, Truth, The Southland Times and the Nelson Mail.  NewzTextPlus is a full text database which means that you will be able to retrieve the whole newspaper article from the database.  
  • Newspaper Source
    Newspaper Source provides cover-to-cover full text for 23 national (U.S.) and international newspapers, including USA Today, The Christian Science Monitor, The Washington Post, The Times (London), The Toronto Star. The database also contains selected full text from more than 180 regional (U.S.) newspapers, including The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, The Detroit Free Press, The Miami Herald, The New York Daily News, The San Jose Mercury News.

Finding Scientific Papers (Primary Literature)

The following databases index primary literature (scientific papers)

  • Biological Abstracts | Help with Searching
    Biological Abstracts is an international database on biology, clinical and experimental medicine, biochemistry and biotechnology. It indexes and abstracts articles in 6,500 serials from over 100 countries and is produced in the United States by BIOSIS
  • Aquatic Science and Fisheries Abstracts | Help with Searching
    Aquatic Sciences & Fisheries Abstracts is an international database on science, technology and management of marine, brackish and freshwater environments. It indexes and abstracts a variety of publications in over 40 languages and is produced in the United States by Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Information System.
  • Web of Knowledge | Help with Searching
    The Web of Knowledge is an interface that searches both the Current Contents and Web of Science (also known at the Science Citation Index) databases at the same time.  Both Current Contents and Web of Science searched together via the Web of Knowledge provides a comprehensive coverage of scientific literature in all fields.
  • SCOPUS 
    Provides citations, abstracts and references covering 14,000 peer-reviewed titles from 4,000 publishers. It includes approximately 27 million abstracts. Subjects covered are Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Engineering; Life and Health Sciences; Social Sciences, Psychology and Economics; Biological, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; and General Science.
