Important note on microbiology books held in the library
Please be aware that microbiology books in the library may fall in different Dewey sequences on level M (the mezzanine floor) depending on their content. This is especially important if you are browsing titles on the shelves rather than accessing them individually from the catalogue.
Generally, if the subject of the book is pure research (or physiological/anatomical research in animal models), then it will fall in the 570 sequence on the side of level M facing Alfred St.
However, if the subject is applied (pharmacological, therapeutic or pathological with medical relevance for humans), it will fall in the 600 sequence on the other side of level M.
If the content of a book is equally shared between pure and applied, then it will generally fall into the 570 sequence.

Finding NZ Material using Library Databases

If you need to find NZ material, you may also like to use the following databases:

  • NZ Science | Help Sheet
A comprehensive index of New Zealand Science, provided by The Crown Research Institutes (CRIs previously the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, DSIR) and the Royal Society of New Zealand.
  • NewzTextPlus | Help Sheet
Newztext is a research archive of the full text of many of New Zealand's key Daily Newspapers. Newspaper articles are not suitable to use as additional references that you have to find for each topic. Reading newspaper articles will give you and overview and the background of a topic, and general public opinion (especially if it's controversial e.g. aerial spraying for Painted Apple Moth)
  • Index New Zealand | No Help Sheet available yet, sorry.
Index New Zealand indexes nearly 300 journals and newspapers. It is the key New Zealand database for social sciences, arts, humanities and general interest material, and indexes some South Pacific journals. To log in click on Connect and then select Index New Zealand from the Other databases menu, then click on the grey Connect button to begin searching. Index New Zealand uses the same search software as Voyager the Library Catalogue, so if you're familiar with searching Voyager using Index New Zealand will be easy.
  • Review of Plant Pathology | Help Sheet
Not a New Zealand database, but an excellent source of New Zealand information related to plant pathogens. Aspects covered include: taxonomy; morphology; genetics; physiology; molecular biology; control; fungicides and antibiotics; regulation and quarantine.
